Thermostat recovery mode explained
Recovery mode means the thermostat started heating or cooling ahead of a scheduled change, so the house reaches the new temperature at the scheduled time instead of after it. Many Honeywell Home models show "Recovery" on the screen while this happens. ecobee calls the feature Smart Recovery or Pre-Heat and Pre-Cool, and Google Nest calls it Early-On.
What does "Recovery" on the thermostat screen mean?
It means the thermostat is running the heat or the air conditioner early on purpose. A schedule change is coming up, and the thermostat wants the house to be at the new temperature when that change arrives, rather than starting only then.
Honeywell's VisionPRO TH8000 manual says it plainly: the message "Recovery" is displayed when the system is activated before a scheduled time period. On the T5, T5+ and T6 Pro Wi-Fi, Honeywell says "RECOVERY" appears in the top right corner of the screen while the feature is active. The T6 Pro, T4 Pro and T6 Pro Smart show "Recovery" in the same status area as "Cool On", "Heat On" and "Compressor Protection".
Seeing it is not a sign of a problem. It is a normal step in a programmed schedule.
How does recovery work?
Honeywell's installation guides describe Adaptive Intelligent Recovery as a comfort setting: the heating or cooling turns on earlier so the indoor temperature matches the setpoint at the scheduled time.
Honeywell's own example for the T5 series: the house sits at 65°F overnight, and the schedule calls for 70°F at 7:00 a.m. With recovery on, the thermostat starts heating at 6:00 a.m. and the house is at 70°F by 7:00 a.m. Without recovery, the heat would start at the scheduled time instead, and the house would still be warming up after 7:00 a.m.
How early the system starts is not a fixed number. ecobee says its version uses a learning algorithm, so the longer you have had the thermostat, the more data it has and the better it predicts the start time. Google says a Nest thermostat can begin heating up to 5 hours before a scheduled temperature.
What is recovery called on each brand?
| Brand and model | Name | Where to turn it on or off | Factory setting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Honeywell Home T4 Pro, T6 Pro Programmable | "Adaptive Intelligent Recovery" (installer option 425) | Installer setup: 0 = No, 1 = Yes | Yes |
| Honeywell Home T6 Pro Smart | "Adaptive Recovery" (installer option 425) | Installer setup: On or Off | On |
| Honeywell Home T5, T5+, T6 Pro Wi-Fi | "RECOVERY", also called Smart Recovery, Smart Start or Adaptive Intelligent Recovery | MENU, press ">" until RECOVERY, SELECT, enable or disable, DONE | Not stated |
| ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium, Enhanced, Lite | "Pre-Heat" and "Pre-Cool" | On the thermostat only: Main Menu > General > Preferences | Not stated |
| ecobee, other models | "Heating Smart Recovery" and "Cooling Smart Recovery" | On the thermostat only: Main Menu > General > Preferences | Not stated |
| Google Nest | "Early-On" | Google Home app: Settings > Nest sense > Early-On | Not stated |
| Google Nest with radiant heat | "True Radiant" | Turned on automatically for radiant systems | On for radiant systems |
| Emerson Sensi | "Early Start" | Not stated | Not stated |
ecobee says you cannot enable or disable Pre-Heat and Pre-Cool from the app. On the Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen) and Nest Thermostat E, Early-On offers two choices, "Start early" or "On schedule", plus a maximum duration. True Radiant applies to the Nest Learning Thermostat, Nest Thermostat E and Heat Link, but not to the Nest Thermostat. Google says it can also turn heating off early to help prevent overshooting the target.
Sensi describes "Early Start" on its blog with a single-stage cooling example of roughly 15 minutes for each degree: to reach 70°F by 8:00 a.m., the system starts at about 6:30 a.m. Sensi does not give a menu path or a factory setting there.
When does recovery not run?
Recovery needs a schedule to work toward, so it does nothing when you are not running one. A few other limits are documented:
- ecobee: Pre-Heat and Pre-Cool do not run during an indefinite Hold.
- Google Nest: Early-On only runs when someone is home. During the learning period after setup, Google says the thermostat does not preheat or pre-cool regardless of your Early-On setting, to save energy.
If your schedule itself seems to be ignored, the issue is more likely in how the schedule periods are set up.
Can recovery bring on auxiliary heat?
On a heat pump system, it can. A large setpoint jump in the morning can bring on auxiliary heat (AUX), the backup heat a heat pump system uses when the heat pump alone cannot keep up. If you see AUX most mornings around the time your schedule changes, a deep overnight setback may be the reason. Our page on why your thermostat shows AUX heat goes through the other causes, and AUX heat vs emergency heat explains how the two differ.
Does recovery use more energy?
Google is the only manufacturer here that comments on it. It says that in some homes, Early-On might use more energy because it runs the system longer. The tradeoff is comfort at the scheduled time against a bit more runtime beforehand.
Should you turn recovery off?
Leave it on if you want the house at the target temperature when the schedule says so. Turn it off if you would rather the system start exactly at the scheduled time and you do not mind the house catching up afterward. If you use a Nest with Eco temperatures as well as a schedule, Nest Eco temperatures covers that setting.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is my thermostat heating when the room is already at the setpoint?
- It may be getting a head start on the next schedule period. On a Honeywell Home thermostat, check for "Recovery" on the display. ecobee notes that on its older models, a blue or orange indicator can appear during this time even when the room is above or below the current setpoint.
- How early does recovery start?
- It varies by brand and by home. Google says a Nest thermostat can start heating up to 5 hours before a scheduled temperature. Honeywell and ecobee do not publish a fixed lead time; ecobee says its algorithm gets better at predicting the longer you have the thermostat.
- Can I turn recovery mode off?
- On Honeywell Home, ecobee and Google Nest thermostats, yes. On a Honeywell T5, T5+ or T6 Pro Wi-Fi it is in the thermostat menu, and on a T4 Pro or T6 Pro it is installer option 425. ecobee lets you change it only on the thermostat, and Nest has an Early-On setting in the Google Home app.
- Does recovery work during a hold?
- Not on an ecobee: Pre-Heat and Pre-Cool do not run during an indefinite hold. That makes sense, since a hold pauses the schedule that recovery is working toward. The other manufacturers covered here do not address it in the documents we checked.
