Thermostat screen is blank
Many thermostat screens dim or switch off on purpose to save power, so first touch the screen, press a button or step close to it. If it stays dark, replace the batteries with fresh alkaline ones if your model takes them. A screen that stays blank after that points to a power problem for a licensed HVAC technician.
Is the screen off on purpose?
Often it is. Many thermostats switch off or dim the display when nobody is using it, and some never light up until you touch them or walk close. Before anything else, try to wake it.
How a screen wakes, and how long it stays on, depends on the model and on whether it has a C-wire (common wire), the wire that gives a thermostat constant power. Honeywell's T4 Pro and T6 Pro guides, for example, keep the screen lit more than five times longer on a C-wire than on batteries alone.
| Thermostat | What wakes the screen | Stays lit(seconds) |
|---|---|---|
| Honeywell Home T4 Pro or T6 Pro, powered by a C-wire | Press any of the five buttons | 45 |
| Honeywell Home T4 Pro or T6 Pro, on batteries only | Press any of the five buttons | 8 |
| Google Nest | Come within about 3 feet (1 meter). Learning Thermostat 3rd and 4th gen: from up to 20 feet with Farsight | Not stated |
| ecobee | Not stated | Set by "Active to Standby Screen Timer" |
| Sensi Smart | Press the backlight button | 10 |
| Lux P521Uc | Press any button | About 10 |
| Amazon Smart Thermostat | Touch the display face | Not stated |
Google says a Nest thermostat turns its screen off when it notices no recent activity nearby. Amazon says its Smart Thermostat display may dim when inactive and comes back to the full view when you touch it.
Can you keep the screen on, or brighter?
Some thermostats let you change this; others only allow it with constant power.
- Honeywell Home T6 Pro: installer setup option 1400 chooses "On Demand" or "Continuous" backlighting, and Honeywell notes a common wire is needed for continuous. Option 1401 sets brightness from 1 to 5 and only appears with the continuous backlight selected.
- Honeywell Home T4 Pro: press Menu and go to "LITE" to set brightness from 1 to 5. The guide says this backlight option only shows when the C-wire is connected.
- ecobee: go to Main Menu > General > Preferences (on the Lite and Essential, Main Menu > Preferences). "Standby Screen Brightness" can be turned off completely, and the option "Screen sleeps when in Sleep Comfort Setting/Mode" turns the screen off during Sleep. Sleep is one of ecobee's comfort settings, so a dark ecobee at night may be doing exactly what it was set to do.
- Google Nest: the display options are Dynamic Farsight, Farsight, Wake on approach, Wake when you pass by, and Wake on press. Google says Farsight is on by default on the 3rd and 4th gen Learning Thermostat, and the 4th gen has Dynamic Farsight on by default.
- Amazon Smart Thermostat: in the Alexa app, open Devices, Thermostat, your thermostat, Settings, Thermostat configuration, then Display brightness, which has separate Active and Inactive modes.
A screen that lights up but will not respond to touch is a different problem; see thermostat screen locked and keypad lock.
Are the batteries low?
If the screen will not wake at all, batteries are the next suspect on any thermostat that uses them. Some models give up the backlight or the whole display as the batteries fade:
| Thermostat | Batteries | What happens as they run down |
|---|---|---|
| Honeywell Home T4 Pro | AA alkaline | A low battery icon appears about two months before they are depleted. Replace them once a year. |
| Honeywell Home T6 Pro | 2 AA (included) | Very low: the backlight is disabled. Critically low: only "BATT", the alert icon and the battery icon show. |
| Sensi Smart | 2 AA alkaline | Replace them when the battery indicator reaches 3 bars. |
| Sensi Lite | 2 AAA | Not stated |
| Sensi Touch and Touch 2 | None | Not applicable |
| Lux P521Uc | Not stated | At 1 bar the display alternates with "LO BATT", with about two months left. Change them at least once a year. |
| Nest Thermostat (2020) | 2 AAA alkaline | Wi-Fi and motion sensing turn off. You may need to tap the right side to wake it. |
| Nest Thermostat E and Learning Thermostat | Built-in rechargeable | When the charge gets very low, the screen turns off completely. |
Use fresh alkaline batteries. Honeywell recommends alkaline in the T4 Pro guide, Google asks for high-quality 1.5 V AAA alkaline batteries from a known manufacturer in the Nest Thermostat (2020), and Lux's TX500U manual says a blank or fading display calls for fresh AA alkaline batteries. After new batteries go into a Sensi, give it 1 to 5 minutes to reconnect to Wi-Fi by itself.
On a Nest with a built-in battery, there is no battery to swap. A blank Nest with no light that will not wake has a drained battery, and Google's fix is to charge it; see Nest thermostat flashing red light.
What if it stays blank with fresh batteries?
Then the thermostat may not be getting the power it needs, and the fix is no longer on the screen. Honeywell's T6 Pro troubleshooting for "Display is blank" is to make sure fresh AA alkaline batteries are correctly installed, and its installation guide notes that the C terminal is optional if batteries are installed. Sensi's Lite installation guide gives two causes for a blank display: the AAA batteries may need replacing, or the system may need a common wire. Adding a common wire is a job for an installer, not something to try yourself.
Sensi Touch and Touch 2 thermostats have no batteries, so a blank screen on one of those goes straight to this step.
Does the screen light up when you touch it, press a button or stand close?
- Yes
It was asleep to save power. Adjust brightness or wake settings if your model offers them.
- No
Does your thermostat take batteries?
- Yes
Does it come back after fresh alkaline batteries, fitted the right way round?
- Yes
The batteries were the cause. Replace them at least once a year, or when the low battery warning appears.
- No
The thermostat may not be getting power. Check the signs at the bottom of this page and call a technician.
- Yes
- No
A Nest with a built-in battery may need charging. Any other thermostat without batteries needs a technician to look at its power.
- Yes
A screen that is lit but reads "Off" is not blank; it is in Off mode, and the heating and cooling will not run until you choose another mode. For a low battery warning that has not yet turned the screen off, see thermostat low battery message.
Frequently asked questions
- Does a blank thermostat screen mean the heating and cooling are off?
- Not necessarily. Many thermostats switch the display off to save power. A Honeywell Home T4 Pro or T6 Pro on batteries alone stays lit for only 8 seconds after you press a button, and a Nest turns its screen off when nobody has been nearby.
- What batteries does my thermostat take?
- It depends on the model. The Honeywell Home T4 Pro and T6 Pro and the Sensi Smart take AA alkaline batteries, the Sensi Lite and the Nest Thermostat (2020) take AAA, and the Sensi Touch and Touch 2 have no batteries at all.
- Can I make my thermostat screen stay on all the time?
- On some models. The Honeywell Home T6 Pro has a continuous backlight option in installer setup, but it needs a C-wire. On ecobee you can set the standby brightness, and on a Nest you can choose when the display wakes. On the Honeywell Home T4 Pro, the brightness setting also needs a C-wire.
- Why is my thermostat blank right after I changed the batteries?
- Check that they are fresh alkaline batteries and that each one faces the right way. Honeywell's T6 Pro guide gives exactly that check for a blank display. If the screen still stays dark, that is one of the signs at the bottom of this page.
