How "Hold" and "Hold Until" work on a Carrier Infinity control
Change the temperature or the activity on the Main Screen. The Infinity System Control then holds it temporarily, and you set how long in 15-minute steps before touching DONE. For a hold with no end, touch HOLD UNTIL and then HOLD. Either way, choose PER SCHEDULE to go back to your programmed schedule.
How does hold work on an Infinity System Control?
Carrier's owner's manual for the Infinity System Control (SYSTXCCITC01-C and SYSTXCCWIC01-C) describes two ways to override your programmed schedule from the Main Screen. A temporary hold keeps your change until a time you choose. A permanent hold keeps it until you put the control back on its schedule. Both start the same way: you change either the temperature or the comfort activity.
To reach the Main Screen, touch anywhere on the Home Screen. Carrier also says the SmartHome mobile app is the most convenient way to use the control, but this page covers the buttons on the wall.
| Hold | How you set it | How long it lasts | How you end it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temporary hold | Change the temperature or activity, set the time, touch DONE | Until the time you set, chosen in 15-minute steps | HOLD UNTIL, then PER SCHEDULE |
| Permanent hold | Change the temperature or activity, then HOLD UNTIL, then HOLD | No end time | HOLD, then PER SCHEDULE |
| ALL ZONES hold (zoned systems) | Touch 'N' Go: HOME or AWAY for ALL ZONES, then HOLD or HOLD UNTIL | HOLD: no end time. HOLD UNTIL: the time you set | HOLD: CANCEL ALL ZONES. HOLD UNTIL: ends at the time you set |
How do you set a temporary hold?
Change the temperature. With the system in AUTO or HEAT, use the Up and Down buttons to set the heating temperature; in AUTO or COOL, do the same for cooling. Carrier says the comfort profile on the left side of the screen then switches to manual and the system is placed in a temporary hold. Use Up and Down again to choose how long to hold, in 15-minute increments, and touch DONE.
You can hold an activity instead of a number. On the left side of the Main Screen is the Touch 'N' Go button. Touch it and choose HOME, AWAY, SLEEP or WAKE. Set the hold time in 15-minute steps and touch DONE. The temperatures and fan setting come from that activity's comfort profile, which you set under COMFORT PROFILES on the menu screen. Carrier's product page describes Touch 'N' Go as a quick way to switch between comfort settings such as home, away and sleep.
How do you make the hold permanent?
Make the same change, then touch the HOLD UNTIL button and touch HOLD. Carrier's manual says the profile on the left shows MANUAL when you changed the temperature by hand. The hold now has no end time, so the schedule stays paused until you cancel it.
On a zoned system, Touch 'N' Go also offers HOME or AWAY for ALL ZONES. After choosing it you pick HOLD, which overrides the schedule in every zone until you CANCEL ALL ZONES, or HOLD UNTIL, which you time in 15-minute steps like any temporary hold.
How do you go back to the schedule?
For a temporary hold, touch HOLD UNTIL, then PER SCHEDULE. For a permanent hold, touch HOLD, then PER SCHEDULE. The control then follows the schedule you built under SCHEDULES on the menu screen. If your changes keep disappearing on another brand, thermostat keeps returning to schedule explains why, and schedule periods covers how periods are laid out.
Why does the system seem slow after you change the setpoint?
Carrier says this is normal. The manual notes that the Infinity system may seem slow to react to setpoint, activity and mode changes, because it ramps capacity and fan speed up gradually to reach the right level of conditioning without wasting energy or causing a hard start. Wait before assuming the hold did not take.
Two other behaviors can look like a hold being ignored. With the AWAY activity, a feature called Advanced Smart Setback may run the temperature anywhere between the Away temperature limits you set, which Carrier says is normal. And if you change the fan speed under FEATURES while the activity is MANUAL, Carrier says only the current fan speed changes, not the saved comfort profile.
When should you use vacation instead?
For a trip of a day or more. The VACATION icon on the menu screen lets you set a start time, a temperature range, a fan speed and a return time, and the control returns to normal on its own. Carrier says the start cannot be earlier than the current time and the vacation must last at least one day. How vacation modes compare across brands is on vacation hold. Frequently asked questions
- How long can a temporary hold last on a Carrier Infinity control?
- You set the end time yourself with the Up and Down buttons, in 15-minute increments. Carrier's manual does not state a maximum length. If you want no end time at all, use HOLD instead of HOLD UNTIL.
- Why does my Infinity control say MANUAL on the left side?
- Because you changed the heating or cooling temperature by hand. Carrier says the comfort profile on the left of the Main Screen switches to manual when you adjust the setpoint, and the system goes into a hold until you return it to the schedule.
- How do I cancel a hold on all zones at once?
- On a zoned Infinity system, Carrier says a permanent hold set for ALL ZONES stays in place until you choose CANCEL ALL ZONES. A HOLD UNTIL set for all zones ends by itself at the time you chose.
- Is a vacation the same as a permanent hold on an Infinity control?
- No. A vacation is planned under the VACATION icon on the menu screen, with a start time, a temperature range, a fan setting and a return time. Carrier says the vacation must last at least one day, and it ends on its own at the return time.
