Carrier Infinity "System Check in Progress"

It is a routine check, not a fault. Carrier says the Infinity System Control shows "System Check in Progress" while the system runs its normal 1 p.m. filter check, and also whenever the mode changes from Off to Auto, Heat, Cool or Fan Only. The blower may run for a minute or two, and you cannot turn the check off.

What does "System Check in Progress" mean?

It means the Infinity system is checking filter usage. Carrier's owner's manual for the Infinity System Control (SYSTXCCITC01-C and SYSTXCCWIC01-C) says this message on the operating status screen means the system is performing its normal 1 p.m. filter check. The same check also runs any time you change the system mode from Off to Auto, Heat, Cool or Fan Only.

Carrier names the feature TrueSense. In its note on switching out of Off, the manual says the system runs the blower for a minute or two while TrueSense determines filter usage, and that the feature is part of the system design and cannot be turned off.

So the message is expected at two times: around 1 p.m. each day, and right after you take the system out of Off.

Where do you see it?

On the Equipment Operating Status screen. From the Main Screen, touch MENU, then OPERATING STATUS. Carrier describes that menu as a quick look at the status of your Infinity heating and cooling system. The Equipment Operating Status screen shows which function the system is performing and which stage the heating or cooling equipment is running at. When you are done, press DONE to go back.

The same OPERATING STATUS menu has two other screens worth knowing:

Why does the blower run with no heating or cooling?

Carrier treats it as part of the check. When you switch from Off to any other mode, Carrier says a minute or two of blower before anything else happens is normal. The manual adds a broader note: the Infinity system may seem slow to react to setpoint, activity and mode changes, because it ramps capacity and fan speed up gradually to avoid wasting energy and to avoid a hard start. Carrier's brochure describes the same approach as bringing comfort levels to programmed settings smoothly.

If you are used to a fan that runs only with heating or cooling, a short run on its own can look odd. Our pages on fan "On" vs "Auto" and circulate mode explain the usual fan settings, and thermostat Off mode explains what Off stops. On the Infinity control, Carrier says Off means the system will not control temperature, humidity or the fan.

What happens with the result of the check?

The filter usage it measures feeds the Accessories Status screen. If you turned on the air filter pop-up under REMINDERS on the menu screen, the control reminds you when it is time for maintenance. Once the filter has been dealt with, reset its counter under Accessories Status with RESET and SAVE. Carrier's brochure lists filter reminders among the control's features. Reminders in general are covered on the Carrier service reminder page and the cross-brand filter reminder page.

When is it not the system check?

When the heating or cooling never starts afterward. Carrier describes the blower run after leaving Off as lasting a minute or two. If the message stays on the operating status screen well past that, or the system does not move on to heating or cooling when the setpoint calls for it, the message is no longer the explanation. Check that the mode is right and that the setpoint is on the correct side of the room temperature; Auto mode explains how the control chooses between heat and cool. Carrier says your dealer's details, or 1-800-Carrier, appear under SERVICE, then SERVICE INFORMATION, and that this information also appears if your system requires service.

"System Check in Progress" on a Carrier Infinity control

Did you just switch out of Off, or is it around 1 p.m.?

  • Yes

That is the TrueSense filter check. Let the blower run for a minute or two; normal operation follows.

  • No

Does the system go on to heat or cool when the setpoint calls for it?

    • Yes

Nothing to do. The check runs on its own and cannot be turned off.

    • No

Check the mode and setpoint. If it still does not heat or cool, call your dealer or a licensed HVAC technician.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Carrier Infinity blower run when I turn the system on?
Carrier says that when you change the mode from Off to Heat, Cool, Auto or Fan Only, it is normal for the blower to run for a minute or two. During that time the system uses its TrueSense feature to work out how much of the filter has been used.
Can I turn off "System Check in Progress" on a Carrier Infinity?
No. Carrier says the TrueSense filter check is part of the system design and cannot be turned off. It runs at 1 p.m. and after a change from Off to another mode.
How long does the Carrier Infinity system check take?
The owner's manual says the blower runs for a minute or two when you switch out of Off. It does not give a length for the daily 1 p.m. check, so we do not state one.
Does "System Check in Progress" mean I need to replace the filter?
Not by itself. The check measures filter usage; the result shows under Accessories Status, and a pop-up reminder appears only if you turned on the air filter reminder under REMINDERS.
